Curriculum Overview

The education and curriculum offered at Nishkam Primary School Wolverhampton is guided by the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework and the National Curriculum. We work to these guidelines whilst enriching the curriculum and extending the child’s experience to achieve wholesome learning and foster children’s ‘Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development.’ Parents and families have vital roles to play and to support pupils. Learning from our heritage, history, religion, language and culture, these elements as well as enrichment activities such as sport, music and arts are incorporated into daily life at school.

 

Creative Curriculum

The creative curriculum includes the subjects Geography, History, Art, DT, and ICT. Where possible we also link RE and Science to the topic. The children study six topics over the course of the year, one per half term. The children learn core the core skills of each area and are taught to think and question in more depth with regard to each topic. The creative curriculum promote independence, higher order thinking skills and resilience and enable the children to work individually with a partner or within a group.

Numeracy

At Nishkam Primary School we follow the Mathematics National Curriculum. Mathematics teaches us how to make sense of the world around us through developing a child’s ability to calculate, to reason and to solve problems. It enables children to understand and appreciate relationships and pattern in both number and space in their everyday lives.

 

Children are taught mathematical skills and how to apply these to meaningful situations. To develop a confident and positive attitude towards Mathematics. We adopt a CPA (Concrete Pictorial Abstract) approach to Maths in order for the children to master the skills. Concrete refers to physically practicing the skill, this could be using counters or number squares. The Pictorial aspect means the child has understood the concrete phase and can now relate that to pictures or diagrams. The Abstract phase means they can now represent the problems using mathematical notation.  Our Mathematics curriculum is differentiated so that children work at levels appropriate to their ability. There is an emphasis on communication, problem solving and reasoning.

 

WHAT?

Practical counting based activities, beginning with recognising and representing quantities. Children read and write numerals and begin to use mathematical language to describe the place value of numbers.

 

Children manipulate concrete objects and create their own pictorial representations to represent calculations. Mathematical vocabulary is taught and used to support their thinking.

 

Greater emphasis on written recording of methods with the use of concrete objects and pictures to support their understanding. Children are expected to use subject-specific vocabulary to reason and explain their thinking.

 

 

Literacy

At Nishkam Primary School we adopt the English National Curriculum. English has a highly important place in education and in society. A secure and in-depth education English will teach pupils to speak and write fluently so that they can eloquently communicate to others. Through their reading and listening, others can communicate with them. Literature in particular plays a key role in developing a child academically and emotionally. Reading also enables pupils to acquire knowledge and to build on what they already know. All the skills of language are essential to participating fully as a member of society; pupils who do not learn to speak, read and write fluently and confidently are effectively disenfranchised.

 

The children have regular guided reading sessions that teach them not only how to read but essential comprehension skills to. They complete written tasks in independent sessions and take part in discussions and activities like shared reading. This enables the children to develop a love of reading and share their thoughts, ideas, likes and dislikes with others in their class.

 

We use ‘Oxford Reading Tree’ as our core reading scheme but this is supplemented with other books in a ‘Book Banding’ system in order to provide breadth, challenge and consolidation.  Children are taught phonics using primarily ‘Letters and Sounds’ this provides them with a carefully structured, developmental approach to reading using synthetic phonics.  Literacy skills are linked to and applied in all areas of the curriculum.

Languages

Nishkam Primary School currently teach French to year 3 and year 4. Topics covered include Getting to know you, All about me, Food Glorious Food, Our school and Time.

 

Faith Development and Religious Education

 

Faith Development (FD) is taught in Nishkam schools as a discrete aspect of RE in all years, from Key Stage 1 to post-16. FD is not focused on a single faith but is intended to promote the development of a pupils’ personal faith or belief system in a multi-faith context. FD is focused on the values, virtues, dispositions, practice and impact of faith. It is about learning what it is to be human and the values that inspire the highest aspirations of humanity. FD is best promoted through inspirational teaching that motivates pupils’ interest and commitment.

 

Religious Education is generally understood to have two Attainment Targets:

• Learning about religion

• Learning from religion.

The first of these attainment targets will be reflected in how successfully pupils learn about the nature of religion and the religious traditions of the faiths that are part of the school’s programme of study. The second attainment target is seen in how successfully the school’s provision of RE enables pupils to ask deep questions, respond personally to RE lessons and relate their learning in RE to their own lives.

 

The faith curriculum is the combination of the curriculum for RE and the programme for Faith Development.

Music 

The Wolverhampton Music Service provide the following programme for Nishkam Primary School.

The children listen to music and answer questions about it to increase their understanding and enjoyment. They also use listening skills to help them to participate rhythmically in some items in the programme, which will include music of varying styles and periods. The workshops touch on the scientific principles of sound production, vibration and pitch.

“Meet the String Family” can help cover the following programmes of study from the NC for Music. KS1 children learn:

4a – to listen with concentration and to internalise and recall sounds with increasing aural memory.

4b – how the combined musical elements can be organised and used expressively within simple structures.

4c – how sounds can be made in different ways.

4d – how music is used for particular purposes.

The workshop uses:

5d – a range of live music from different times.

Within a year the pupils will learn a wind, percussion and string instrument.

Provided for by Wolverhampton Music Service.

 

The school also has a choir run by Miss Gull with regular meetings.

Year 1 prepare and participate with the annual “singing in the rain” concert.
