550th Gurpurab Celebrations

Nishkam Schools celebrate the 550th Birthday of Guru Nanak Dev ji

We wish all Nishkam friends and family a Happy 550th Gurpurab today, marking the birth of the first Sikh Guru, Guru Nanak Dev Ji.

Pupils gained an understanding on the life and teachings of the first Sikh Guru and how the teachings correlate with the school virtues.

“One who remembers God, helps the helpless.” Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji's 550th Gurpurab message:

May blessings be upon us all on the historic 550th anniversary of the birth of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. As we become increasingly interconnected in our present millennium, may our global celebrations shed light on Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s timeless message for all humans.

With compassion, humility and courage, Guru Nanak Dev Ji motivated all people to shun arrogance, hypocrisy, vengefulness, malice, blind desire and greed. He inspired us to emulate God’s goodness, to establish peace and harmony within and outside ourselves and to exercise responsible stewardship for nature and the environment. Today, as we face many shared challenges in our contemporary world, may his message and remarkable life example inspire us to be wise and visionary. May it motivate us to practice and promote virtuous living, guided by a deep conviction to steadfastly do what is good and right to make our stay on this plant fruitful and worthwhile, for ourselves and others to flourish.

By celebrating Guru Nanak’s legacy, may we be impelled to be selfless and benevolent, to embrace self-reliance, to recognise our interdependence and to seek the betterment of one and all. May this keep us from slipping into despondency and apathy. May it instil us instead with Chardi kala, or ever-ascending optimism, and a renewed impetus to make bridges with and collaborate with others.

May the 550th anniversary celebrations illuminate all these dimensions of Guru Nanak’s legacy and much, much more. For it will be an historic opportunity to rediscover and reapply Guru Nanak’s teachings, so as to generate new possibilities for transforming our personal and collective lives and the lives of future generations.
