Home-School Agreement

At Nishkam School Trust we believe that parents/carers are the first and foremost educators of their children, and that we are called to support them.

We draw upon the multi-faith nature of the Sikh ethos in order to support parents/carers in their task of nurturing their children in faith, love, academic excellence, and ability to build strong meaningful relationships.  

To achieve our goals, we continually reflect on our practice, celebrate and consolidate our success, and realistically explore ways of journeying more closely together. We aim to work in partnership with parents/carers to support their child’s learning; modelling exemplary behaviour for our pupils at all times, whilst creating a safe, respectful and inclusive environment for pupils, staff and parents/carers.

At Nishkam School we provide a caring, happy environment in which all children will thrive and feel valued. We know that children need to feel safe and secure in order to learn well and we nurture a culture of mutual respect to develop such an environment. We have the highest expectations of all children to do their best in all areas of school life. We wish to develop a set of virtues, skills and attitudes in our pupils so that when they leave our school, they are equipped for all of the challenges of life and the next phase of education.

In order to achieve goals you can expect the school to:

  • Provide a balanced virtues-led curriculum designed to meet the needs of each child;
  • Ensure that the standards of learning and teaching are the highest possible;
  • Provide opportunities to undertake faith practice and gain knowledge;
  • Maintain a safe, caring and happy environment for all children where each child is equal, special and valued;
  • Encourage and model respect for one another, for property and the environment both in and around school;
  • Encourage positive behaviour and deal promptly with poor behaviour;
  • Keep parents informed about the progress of their children through regular meetings and reports;
  • Inform parents about school activities through a range of communications;
  • Develop a strong partnership between the school, parents/carers and the pupil, by sharing regular information regarding attendance related issues to ensure their child achieves good attendance;
  • Inform parents/carers of the impact of unauthorised absence (unauthorised term time holiday’s/ non-attendance or low attendance) on their child’s education and the likelihood of a Penalty Notice/Prosecution being issued.

Agreement for pupils I will do my best to:

  • Follow and live the core virtues
    • be kind and loving to myself, to my parents, to fellow pupils and staff
    • work hard to the best of my ability;
  • Enjoy school;
  • Attend school in full uniform and to bring all equipment every day;
  • Be punctual (on time) to school and lessons;  
  • Take care of my property, equipment and my school environment;
  • Tell an adult at school if I am worried or unhappy;
  • Behave safely at all the times;

Parent/Carer Code of Conduct, to help our child at school I/we will:

Support the school ethos:

  • Recognise that Nishkam School is a faith school where my child will take part in worship, Religious Education and faith/virtues development. This will include learning about the Sikh religion as well as other religions including making visits to places of worship;
  • Recognise that Nishkam School is a vegetarian school;
  • Role modelling good behaviour and language to my child.

Support attendance and punctuality:

  • Make sure that my child arrives in school on time and is collected on time every day;
  • Support school with my child in aiming for 100% attendance each year by ensuring that my child attends school regularly and inform the school of reasons for absence;
  • Accept that holiday in term time will not be authorised and is illegal;
  • Let school know of any change of address or phone numbers and inform the school if  parents are leaving the country for any reason;

Support my child to succeed:

  • Read daily a page of the ‘Nishkam passport’ and reflect on the ‘signs of success’ with your child;
  • Respectfully correct your child’s behaviour, at all times and in particularly in public, where it could lead to conflict, aggression or unsafe conduct;
  • Support my child with any homework and other home learning opportunities, in particular regular reading;
  • Attend parents’ evenings and parent workshops to discuss and support my child’s progress;
  • Let the school know about any concerns or problems that might affect my child’s work or behaviour;
  • Provide a safe, secure and happy environment at home for my child, acknowledging that they learn at home;
  • Ensure that my child has had had sufficient sleep and eaten breakfast so that they are ready to learn. Please let us know if we can support breakfast provision.

Be a role model:

  • Treat all members of the school community with respect – setting a good example with speech and behaviour; this will mean seeking solutions calmly where any challenges may arise.  
  • Approach the right member of school staff to help resolve any issues of concern.

Be kind to the environment

  • Try very hard to reduce my carbon footprint in how I get my child to school. Think about using public transport or the school bus where walking is not possible.

We appreciate that as parents, we expect the highest standards of each other. Behaviour that would be unacceptable includes the following:

  • Disrupting, or threatening to disrupt, school operations (including events on the school grounds and sports team matches);
  • Using offensive language, displaying a temper, or aggressive or threatening behaviour towards members of the school community either in person or via messaging (social media, text, email)
  • Posting defamatory, offensive or derogatory comments about the school, its staff or any member of its community, on social media platforms;
  • Use of physical punishment against your child;
  • Disciplining another person’s child – please bring any behaviour incidents to a member of staff’s attention;
  • Parking illegally or without due care and attention of others when dropping off or picking up your child from school.
  • Smoking, drinking alcohol, possessing or taking drugs (including legal highs) on the school premises;
  • Bringing dogs onto the school premises (other than guide dogs);
